Yes, I know what Socialism is. And I know that Liberals commonly use definitional purity as a pretext to avoid any real discussion. Socialism is represented as a spectrum. The common feature of that spectrum is the confiscation of wealth from some people in order to provide benefits for others. A corollary is the creation of government bureaucracy to manage these transfers and to make decisions as to who or what gets taxed, and how that money is to be allocated. On one end of that spectrum is a limited government which collects taxes in order to provide only those services which cannot reasonably be provided by the private sector, such as national defense. On the other end is a Government which owns the means of production, and makes all economic decisions which are mandatory and backed up with force, if necessary. Specific programs and policies can be identified as more or less socialist on a comparative basis. So, while libraries and public roads are indeed within that spectrum, they are far less "socialist" than a government run health care system.

For them, consistency demands that a rejection of something like the health care bill implies that libraries must also be rejected. These are, of course, ludicrous arguments, but popular nonetheless. I actually think that most people, including Liberals understand that "socialism" as used in the current political context is something of a spectrum as I’ve described. But as a means of avoiding the discussion as to whether we are becoming more socialist, which they recognize would be wildly unpopular, they seek to avoid the discussion by falling back on a narrow definition which excludes whatever program or policy under discussion. As a side benefit of doing this, they also get to belittle and demean whomever suggests that a program or policy is a move toward socialism, by questioning their intelligence.

I all started when too many Americans were exposed to lead paint as children.

They grew up and this is the result. Lead line wine goblets did the Romans in so it is fitting.

Socialism…That is a popular word these days. Everyone thinks we are becoming socialist because of the Health Care Bill. But think about it; We have public schools, public libraries, public roads, public parks, all of which are paid for collectively by taxpayers. We have social security as well, and a government run postal service What makes any of said things not socialist and health-care in fact socialist? Why? Poor laws requiring townships to provide for the health and welfare of the poor existed in the colonial days, and were made into law when the states were formed. The screeching right simply does not know their history.

The only socialism in the US is the tax cuts and infrastructure spending for the benefit of the corporations. It’s interesting that we never hear the republicans complain about the total lack of coporate self-sufficiency.

Okay…….Just so you know The BIG BAD Insurance co. are the ones that are going to make a killing off this health care Law. They are the ones that still offer ins. The government has to collect 2.9% of every ones income for 4 years before it can compete. So the BIG BAD Insurance companies are going to increase YOUNG peoples amount for insurance to off set the pre exiting coverage, which all states have by the way. Have you noticed that all health care and pharmacy stock went up. But in 4 Years you may be able to get a government plan but for now we are screwed.

but I do know that the government making a person buy something is ( insert word here) .

I do know that Europe is tiny and has many problems and the USA is very large and has many problems ,, I’m betting on Americans fixing America where Europeans are hoping that their governments fix their countries ( or collectively depends - upon the problem) problem
