Are you able to get Health( affordable) Insurance?
I am a Republican (now becoming an independent) who is unable to get affordable health insurance. I had breast cancer 20 years ago and as soon as the insurance companies ask me if I had any previous sickness, they put the phone down. I am from UK (now US citizen) and the healthcare in UK is much superior to USA. I have lived here 30 years and DO NOT AGREE WITH MY REPUBLICANS ON THIS ISSUE. You see I HAVE EXPERIENCED BOTH SYSTEMS(recently was in UK and able to see a doctor within 1 hour) and get upset when they run the UK system down. All you get here in the news is propaganda about the healthcare system in UK. I have brothers and sister living in UK who have no problem getting healthcare of the best.
Justmyopnion - Where did you get that info. from. A friend of mine who is a nurse here from UK just went home to see her father who had a heart attack. He is 94 yrs of age and they gave everything to him to extend his life and he is now at home. You hear of one case about not getting the drugs in UK. That is because there is more to the story.
alcor - yes I read this article but you miss the point completely. The medicine would prolong his life by 8 weeks, maybe!! I have a nephew who receives a medicine for anklospondilitis which costs $15000 a month and he is not refused it. People here just don’t get it. I have family who are older and younger than myself who are being treated for serious diseases and there is no qualms about the treatment. Here in the USA you cannot get treated. That is a fact, if you don’t have enough money. I tried to get a new doctor because the one I had moved away and I was told they would not take non insured people. I eventually got an appointment which was for 2 1/2 months and that is a GP APPOINTMENT.
To vampire man - You are so right. I pay as I go or get instalments to meet my needs. It is so disheartening since I have used the UK system and paid into it. Of course it is not free but I would rather pay something so that I can go to the doctor hospital charging me such high prices. Something has to change and I am afraid the doctors and hospitals will not let go of the large sums of money they get for their services. The doctors in the UK are very well off but not rich like they are here.
health-quotes.isgreat.org - my family have this health insurance. It is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.

From the NPR Article:
"In Britain, the National Health Service doesn’t pay for Tarceva, with some rare exceptions. It’s one of the tough decisions the National Health Service has had to make. In order to provide coverage for everyone, the NHS has to put limits on medical treatments. By rationing care in this way, the NHS has managed to keep costs down to about $3,800 per person a year — a little over half of the average American’s yearly medical bill. "

Except..in England..the public system will not pay for drugs that extend life for a terminal patient. Insurance companies here have to pay. It is really the value we put on life or quality of it that is different between the systems.
I personally wouldn’t mind having a more efficient system, but many would scream bloody murder if you deny treatment for a person with cancer where a certain drug can extend life by 6 months, but not cure it. So it really differs depending on circumstances.
Same in some of the other countries with socialized medicine. I know a woman (who lives here now) who grew up in Norway where her mother still lived. Her mother had cancer and reached the end of her ration for treatment, and was just sent home to die. She was older, but still. I don’t like it.
Tough call

I am uninsurable due to pre-existing conditions. If it’s not offered at the Cherokee hospital I have to pay out of pocket, but I am luckier than most to at least have that available. I spend a lot of money on my rheumatologist though.
I thank you for posting this. I hear people in my state who are poorer than dirt and have to go around with rotting teeth because they can’t afford the dentist whine and moan about how they are scared of "socialist health care."
The truth of any health care system is that if you don’t have a lot of money you are going to get less quality care than people who do, but at least in a public system it’s far more equal. I’d rather have to wait a week than not have it at all.

Justmyopinion.. That is an awesome article! I hope the poster reads it. She has probably never experienced it as a healthy person. It all comes down to rations on healthcare. Rations are not what America needs. England ranks in the bottom half in the world for cancer survival. This is my favorite quote from your NPR article.

"Americans can get Tarceva, but many have to file a considerable amount of paperwork to get it from private or government insurers. Patients also have the option of applying to the manufacturer to provide it free.

Critics of the NHS say these limits are to blame for the United Kingdom’s poor showing in a recent survey of cancer survivorship in 31 countries, published in Lancet Oncology. For the percent of people with breast, prostate or colorectal cancer who lived five years after their diagnosis, the United States ranked as one of the top three countries. England and Wales ranked in the bottom half. "

I’ve had health insurance through two different companies that I worked for and through a spouse’s company for a total of 11 years. I was off my parents policy after I moved out at ~19 yo. I’m now 40. I haven’t been able to afford to buy my own health coverage at any time… I’m currently not covered and can’t afford ANY plan and I don’t drink and have never smoked and have no pre-existing health issues aside from chronic back pain which OTC pain medication can’t touch. It’s much cheaper for me to go to a clinic that bills on a sliding scale AND takes installments than it is for me to buy insurance. Also, the ER that I’d be forced to go to if need be would provide free care because I meet the guidelines. The problem is that most people don’t have these options and shouldn’t have to deal with having to resort to these types of options. If you’re sick/injured you should be able to get immediate care no matter what. You shouldn’t have to worry about being turned away or weather you can afford treatment or not. The fact that most Americans do have to worry is one of the saddest things about the state of our country today.
