Why do many people not want universal health care?
I saw the film sick recently, and yes I know that michael moore may have exagerated some parts of it, but I have also done some research and used common sense, as well as talked to my girlfriend that lives in the uk, and i concluded that it is a lot better then the current system we have.
It’s a lie that those who are insured get the benefits that they pay for, and it’s a lie a that when you have insurance you are safe. It’s just outrageous that insurance companies play god and decide who gets to live and who doesn’t, and that this is allowed to go on in a country that prides itself on being #1. Why is it that 24 out of 25 industralized nations have a socialized health care, and most are ranked higher then the united states? Why should you worry weather you can afford to get treatment rather then if the treatment will help you? I just think its immoral and in disbelief that this is going on. So why would you not want universal health care? Why would you not want everyone to live. Even if taxes were raised to pay for this, it would just be the same as you pay for your insurance now, but you would have a peace of mind.
Right! So i guess its better to not be able to afford a surgery rather then wait a little longer for it huh or go bankrupt cuz you cant pay for your medical bills.
Because many have been lied to. They have been told it will nor work, or will cost the US too much.
FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.
FACT - US kids have a higher death rate aged under four than those children in western European countries with universal healthcare
A dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if born in Canada, or France, or Cuba, or Germany, or Japan…

Because I’ve seen what it’s like in other countries, and I’ve experienced our US military medical service, which will resemble universal health care.
It sucks!! I used to go to the clinic in the morning, only to be turned away in the afternoon because I wouldn’t get treated that day.
In universal health care, you get treated first by WHO you are rather than by first come first serve.
You WILL not like universal health care unless you are someone special.

amazing how much you are lied too — i’m not. that’s too bad really. if you look at the other countries that have the "universal health care" it stinks and they are NOT happy. a fiend of mine had to wait 4 years for knee surgery and he’s a young b=guy who then could not work and it was just horrible but - he kept getting pushed down on the list.
i’m sick of MY taxes being raised because someone is going to the emergency room for a case of the sniffles or even the doctor for the same.

Because the hospital corporations, drug companies and insurance companies have strong lobbyists working for them, and put out lots of propaganda.
Bill Frist is the brother of the man who owns HCA, and that is NOT a coincidence. He even thought about running for President a while back, scary.
In our country, money rules and the health care business is BIG business, projected to be 14 % of the GNP in the future.
It’s a business that always has customers. UHC would change that, and they will fight you to the death to keep their business. Literally.

personally, the reason that the states doesn’t have it is the main reason that I would never move to the states, nor would I advise anyone to move there. We don’t have to pay for any health care, and that’s the way it should be. People shouldn’t be afraid to go to the doctor or the emergency because they can’t afford it.

Some people have employees and don’t want to pay up. Health care is poorly managed in this country and very costly as a result. Full coverage can equal half a person’s paycheck- that’s just nuts. At least a quarter of the money is wasted by a bloated bureaucracy. Drug chains mark up the prices of already expensive drugs by hundreds of percent in many cases. I take a drug that has been made for fifty years but it costs 600 dollars for a two month supply. I COULD GET THE SAME DRUG IN MEXICO FOR 1/4 THE COST- WE ARE CANNIBALIZING OUR OWN CITIZENS!

A July 9, 2007 broadcast of CNN’s The Situation Room aired a "fact check" segment by CNN’s senior health correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Sicko.[43] Immediately following the segment, Moore was interviewed live on CNN by Wolf Blitzer.[44] Moore stated that Gupta’s report was inaccurate and biased. Moore posted a point-by-point response on his website.[45] After a debate with Moore on Larry King Live,[46] Gupta posted a message about his position on Sicko and CNN’s coverage.[47]

Because it’s not the govt’s job to take care of you like Micheal Moore and many other liberals say it should. It’s not mine either. What many people don’t know or even bother to read in the constitution is the the fed govt was only set up to enforce the laws and protect the it’s people. It wasn’t framed to become a socialist system that it’s slowly becoming and will increase with Obama and his liberal cronies in the Whitehouse and in Congress.

Because the insurance I have now is better than anything the government could give me! If you can pay for it, you should get it. I don’t want to pay for anyone else’s healthcare. Get a job!
Also,
"Why would you not want everyone to live"
Everyone can’t live, someone has to die. That’s just the way the world works. We can’t always save everyone, and if we did, the world would be overpopulated. Mother Nature will always find a way to kill us off.

I would much rather pay more for a doctor that is competent, and not just allow anybody to practice medicene at a flat rate

Not all countries with socialized medicine have great results. Many have mediocre health care systems. There is no drive that pushes doctors to take 4 more years of medical school or specialized training to become a specialist such as a neurosurgeon- or the best. Where is the payoff? The costs to the doctors are extremely high. Medical school can wipe out their families finances or nest eggs and then malpractice is the next bullet.
The problem with socialized medicine is that everyone gets the same level of care-. They need to cater to the "mean" (that is a statistical term for average) by definition. In other words they shoot for average- or helping the most of the masses.
Very few countries have been able to fix this dilemma.
Drugs are so expensive, hospital care, etc. is very expensive. How about special procedures like invitro fertilization, abortion, cosmetic issues, specialized surgery, high risk surgery, do they get paid for? Some insurances do pay for them, and others don’t. Where does the money come from to help the people who can’t afford it? How about the cost to cover people on life support for an extended period of time?
Currently in our system this is based on what you buy/pay for independently. Employer plans are partially paid for, but sometimes they fall short of what people want in terms of insurance. Anyone can supplement their employee plans, or pay for insurance independently if they so choose and have the money. What do we do with the people who don’t have the money?—It is about money- as much as it is about healthcare. These can be costly items- who is going to foot the bill- and if you say government - then by extention you mean the middle class.
I have travelled to many countries, and been in the hospital (water poisoning for example). In several instances I had to pay before I was admitted—
I agree something should be done about it- but it is a difficult situation to resolve.

I have talked to many medical professionals about this issue, people who would be effected by universal health care. They argue that the work load would be extremely increased, and their payment will only earn less money. It increases the work load and decreases the salary. Our country has a shortage of doctors, increasing the work load but not the amount of money they receive, is only counter productive and will make less people want to be doctors.
Not only that, the system is immoral. The richest people would be paying the most while people who make less would be getting the same exact coverage and paying much less. Everyone should pay equally, for equal coverage and if people can’t pay for it, don’t get it. It is that simple. The government is not their to play robin hood, it is their to provide a service, and if they do decide to create a government controlled health care system, everyone should pay for it equally, and if peoples taxes are raised for it, but other peoples taxes aren’t, then it is immoral.
I agree everyone deserves have health care, but don’t give them something they haven’t earned.

HAVE YOU EVER CHECKED THE QUALITY OF HEALTH CARE IN COUNTRIES THAT HAVE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. PLUS THIS COUNTRY CANNOT AFFORD IT.

I’d suggest you take a closer look at the universal health care systems in other countries. Why do people who can afford to; opt to private system in the UK and Germany? I too know people in those countries, They DO NOT like the system as it stands and would like to see reform. Sure, you’re gonna get free medical care there, but as they tell me, the problem is when, and with what quality? Universal Health Care sounds great, but practically speaking it’s successful application would be dismal at best. Compare the statistics of insurance fraud by Doctors treating Medicare patients vs. privately insured patients. Much more fraud w/medicare ones. Why? Federal Gov’t bureacracy too large and has no real incentive to be diligent. Private insurance companies monitor their claims better because their employees have to answer to someone. Also what incentive is there for a smart person to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, and many years of schooling and sacrifice, to then be employed in a system that will dictate their pay scale? Why does so many foreign doctors want to practice in this country of private medicine? Why is our medical system (doctors, research, hospitals), envied around the world? Look I’m not saying what we have here is perfect. Nor that other countries don’t have good doctors, hospitals, etc. But what I am saying is that if you go to the universal health model that say the UK has, I think it will seriously compromise the quality of health care here as well as the incentive for people to make the sacrifices it takes to become a doctor. Also, do you honestly think the gov’t can efficiently run another large bureacracy? And lastly, given the inefficiecy, who will pick up the tab? Someone has to pay for it, and I think I know who’d end up footing the bill. Should we bankrupt the next generation? What with the current mismanagemants, and subsequent bailouts, it looks like that’s where we are headed. Again, it would be nice to have someone footing the bills for medical expenses. I pay close to $800.00 a month for two of us. I don’t have big company benefit package. I’m self employed. It’s not great insurance, but I also know the pitfalls of universal plan and feel not only myself, but the country would be worse off. However
I would like to see medicaid revamped, broadened to include additional people Then hopefully people won’t have to use the emergency room to get non emergency treatment.

you forget its actually cheaper as well.
