Why are people upset about healthcare reform?
i dont think medicine should be a business. i dont care if insurance companies lose money. but why are so many people rallying to stop this. i believe more people would chase their dreams if they didnt have to worry about health costs.
e.g. i could afford to travel and pick up small jobs without worrying about healthcare costs if i were to get sick or injured.
why should only the rich be taken care of? if other countries like Canada and the UK can have socialized healthcare, why cant we?
People in the US really are full of crap about the effects of a system like the UK’s. Apart from the absolutely blatant malicious lies like people over a certain age can’t get treatment etc there are some ludicrous misconceptions about it.
The US is based on freedom of choice (I wonder how many people who use that argument in health care oppose it in abortion?). Having to decide whether to eat or take the medication you need isn’t freedom of choice! We have plenty of choice here in the UK. If I need a referral to a hospital I get a choice of which to go to. I could pick the one that would see me quickest, the one with the lowest rates for hospital infections like MRSA and C. difficile, the one with the best reputation in that particular field, the nearest, the one with the best parking or any other criteria I chose to apply. Not only that, I could also choose to get private medical insurance and bypass the NHS altogether. Brits on average pay several thousand dollars a year less for health care than Americans do, so that big saving would easily buy some private health cover. So that would be yet another choice thrown in!

Cause americans r easily brainwashed by ppl like o’reily and fox news goonies. Us canadians have it nice with free healthcare. Wouldn’t trade that for anything.

too many people in politics make big $$ from insurance companies. as long as that remains the case we’ll never see meaningful reform.

I think the worst thing we can do is sit here and do nothing, or trust the insurance companies to "do the right thing".
I’m not saying that I agree with the proposals so far, but I’m so glad that we have an administration willing to at least talk about it.

Because of this, this goes against what is written in the opening paragraphs of the United States Constitution.
I am against healthcare reform. A person’s health should be individual - not universal.

You know healthcare in Canada is going under, right?
I can understand wanting to take care of everyone,
but I cant understand making cancer patients wait 3 months (and over) to get surgery, and 9 months to make an appointment to diagnose the cancer in the first place. You’re aware someone could die in that amount of time, right?
If we switch to socialized healthcare, prepare to wait months and months to schedule an appointment with a doctor; it doesn’t matter how sick you are.
People from Canada end up coming down here to the US to get treatments for certain diseases and cancer, because they get it taken care of in a timely manner. They don’t have to worry about getting treated in a short enough time to contain the cancer.
Sure, everyone in Canada is taken care of, but the US has the lowest mortality rate when it comes to infectious diseases and cancer… meaning more people over here end up living when they are diagnosed.
I believe that healthcare here needs reform, but not a total switch to something socialized…

I agree but medicine is a business and unfortunately to often it’s hurt people who need help. Republicans don’t like the idea because the are for business first and individuals later. other folks are scared of anything new and some actually believe what insurance companies tell them. No one in Canada ever lost their home because they got sick.

Uneducated people and people involved with the health insurance industry are upset. This is about politics not whether people want better health care. Keep voting Democratic if you feel this way as I am inclined to agree with you since the World Health Organization and other agencies say Canada and the U.K. have a better health care system than us. We are still good, just not the best while being the most expensive. Did you know most bankruptcies are caused by health care bills and that insurance providers often deny people the coverage they need covered financially, that the insurance providers often insinuate they will cover but keep the option not to? Did you know they also deny the people who need it the most due to pre-existing illnesses. Such as cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s disease, mental illness, and even constant ear infections.

I don’t want it because of the people who think like you… Sorry.
I am always amazed how the insurance company’s are the ones who are blamed? Is it not the Doctors/Hospitals who are billing these expensive treatments?
I bet if you ride through the parking lots of the Insurance Companies and the lots of Hospital staff. I bet the more expensive cars are in the hospital lots.
No one is stopping you from traveling but your ability to pay.
Remember that these same goverment officials who are trying to talk us into accepting it, will not be using the plan themself.

If the Canadian healthcare system is so great, why does the government spend over a billion a year to send Canadian patients to the USA for hip replacements?
I do not understand the connection you stated about not being to pick up small jobs without the worry of Healthcare.
I guess that makes as much sense as the rest of your logic.

because it’s socialism, if you want a socialist system then move to a socialist country. This country was founded on freedom of choice and it should remains so.. and the government has ruined every program they have controled so far… so why in the H#ll would we let them run healthcare… come on think about it.

Canada’s system is not perfect but I have yet to meet a Canadian who would switch places with Americans. Opponents of health care reform like to cite how Canadians are "forced" to wait months for various procedures but according to Canadians I’ve talked it, those are for elective procedures. The reason some Canadians travel to the US is because they don’t want to wait.
It’s pretty obvious some people have not had to deal with American insurance companies. Otherwise, they would know that people often have to wait often for weeks to see a doctor or get the insurance company’s approval before treatment can begin. They also don’t know that these companies often will delay or deny treatment because it cuts into their profits. They should read up on the story of 17-year-old Nataline Sarkesyan, the leukemia patient who was denied a liver transplant by her family’s insurance company. After a public outcry, Cigna reversed its decision and authorized the transplant but it was too late for her.

–The government has no right to force everybody to use their health plan and that’s what they are planning to do. Where are the Constitutional Rights in this equation????????
–If the health plan they will offer if SO GOOD, why the president, his family, and the Congress will not use it…???????????
–WE, the ones opposed to it, know how to read, we understand what we read, and we have been reading for years and years the problems that other countries, like Canada and Great Britain, with government run plans are having. They have to wait years for appointments regardless of the condition they are suffering, many die without medical attention.
–The government health plan will cover illegals, who *do not* pay taxes. NO, they do not pay taxes, they do not pay federal and/or state taxes, and the sales taxes they pay are not even enough to pay for the energy that one single traffic light consumes because they have a very low purchasing power, so what they pay in sales tax is practically nothing.
–The government health plan will cover abortions, that is exactly the same as approving murder.
–Exactly the people who *do not* pay taxes are the ones that will benefit the most from the government health plan, while the ones who pay taxes will have to pay twice for their health insurance: pay for a private one to get good health service; and pay the raise in taxes to cover the health insurance for those who *do not* pay taxes.
–The Postal Service, Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, the public school system, just to name a few services run by the government, are a complete disaster or in bankrupt and they want to run another one, this time where lives will be on the line?????

People wanted reform; not an entirely new and totally government managed French import. Americans will simply not stand for pin-headed bureaucrats deciding on if and what health care they get. We want an improvement; not garbage. Really, it is mainly the easily led and uneducated that are for the proposed plan.
BTW, GB’s Public Health Service is the laughing stock of the world and many Canadian’s seek US hospitals rather then wait months for needed surgeries/procedures. You need better examples.

You should care. You should care A LOT.
Healthcare Reform is not juist about providing care of those that does not have insurance. Healthcare Reform is about taking the existing limited resource and redistribute it.
Basically, the point of any insurance is to take money from everybody and put it in a pool. The insurance company will take some out of that money for administrative cost. The rest of the money is given out when one of the insured person needs money for disasters, whether it involves the house, car, boat, or health.
Under our current system, those who can afford insurance are paying into it, while those who can not afford do not have insurance. Obama’s Healthcare Reform is about taking some of the benefit from those who can afford it and give it to those who can not afford it.
It sounds good in theory. However, in reality, it is a nightmare.
If you have insurance, you will risk losing some, if not much, of your benefit, because some of your "cost" will be used to pay for someone else who does not have insurance. It is currently being done in hospital - when someone who have insurance go to the hospital, their bills are highers, since hospital have to charge higher to cover for million of people who go to ER without insurance. Under Obama Care, money will be taken out of Medicare, payment to hospital and doctors, and possibly tax to pay for those who do not have insurance.
In other word, you will pay for the insurance for someone else who unable to work, do not work, or does not want to work.
In addition, there will be a limitation on what will be covered. What it mean is that, what problems should the insurance and government pay? If I want to have nose job to look like Tom Cruise, should the tax payer pay for it? If I want my sister to have boob job, should the tax payers pay for it? How about giving bypass surgery on someone who is on the verge of death, or giving chemotherapy for a cancer patient whose doctors think the treatment is future but patient wants it? Where do we draw the line, and who will draw that line? If the resource is limited, would that person who makes the decision say, you are too old or too sick to have this done? Well, that’s what they are doing in Great Britain - if you are too old, you would not qualify for life sustaining dialysis treatment for kidney failure?
You should care, because someday you will be old, and you will be sick. It does not matter whether you are rich or not. How would you like it if someone tell you that YOU ARE TOO OLD OR TOO SICK TO HAVE THIS EXPENSIVE TREATMENT DONE?
