US health care , English guy would love to hear opinions from over there?
I’m in the UK and am a bit surprised that people are fighting to keep a system that primarily benefits insurance companies.
Could I ask these questions please,
1: Is true that over 30% of the US don’t have insurance?
2: Is it true that around 50% of bankruptcies are due to health care bills?
3: What do people do in America if they don’t have the funds?
4: What if you’re operated on without consent (eg. cut out of a car wreck) are you given a bill? What if you can’t pay?
5. What if you’re sectioned/committed under a mental health act,do you get a bill?
6: What kind of things have you heard about the NHS and what do you think about it.
7. Why couldn’t the US have a private and national service like the UK?
I would love to hear all genuine opinions.
Thanks.
We have to pay for dental treatment to an extent, £30 for a filling etc.
Estimates are closer to 15-20% don’t have insurance. About 50 million people. But a lot of people have poor insurance with high deductibles, so they don’t use it.
2. I’ve read that it’s more like 65% of bankruptcies are due to medical costs.
3. If people don’t have money, they don’t go to doctors until they are very sick. Then they go to hospitals, where it costs a lot more because they are so sick or the facilities are just expensive. Then either they end up with a big debt or the government pays the bill.
4. If you are treated because you can’t consent, yes you get a bill and you have to pay it. If you can’t pay, then you declare bankruptcy or the government pays. Sometimes a hospital will not require payment, but that’s very rare.
5. Yes, you get a bill if you are hospitalized for being mentally ill, if you have a job or some income. Otherwise, the government will pay for it.
6. I was married to a Brit. NHS sounded great.
7. The US could have a program like the UK, but the corporatocracy is fighting it like crazy. That’s why all the lies are coming out (like the one about Stephen Hawking) and the screaming crazies at the town hall meetings.
Weirdly, in this country, you can be declared so disabled you get social security benefits because you can’t work due to your disability. But you can not get Medicare for two years. So you have no insurance coverage.
A lot of people are spreading lies about the proposals and sadly people are believing them. There are no death panels, no forced abortions, no one forced to give up their insurance if they are happy with it. The insurance companies are terrified because they don’t want competition and they don’t want to have to actually provide coverage to sick people. Most people will be insured under most of the proposals. I can’t fathom how people think having no insurance is better than having affordable insurance, while complaining about not being able to afford medical care.

yes these things are true. most adult americans dint have proper medical insurance. and those who do, it only covers basics. i am 23. married with 2 kids. my children get Medicaid which covers everything they need but e and mu husband are denied help because of our income. even though we struggle to pay bills. if someone goes to the ER and gets treatment they receive a bill in the mail and they can make payments. a lot of people who are in debt, it is because of medical bills. children are the only ones who get the proper things they need. i have psoriasis on my body, in need of dental work and a few other things that need to be checked but cant. just to get into an office to see a dermatologist will cost me 200.00 up front. then i will be mailed another bill containing the cost of the treatment. right now we have our new president Obama. which i think he won by using lies to manipulate the people. he is trying to get this new "improved" health care called Obama-care. too much to go into but look that up and you will see that even though we don’t have proper care now, were better off this way than going about his plan.

I work with people all the time who are in crisis because of car accidents. They work for a living but their jobs don’t provide insurance and they can’t afford to buy their own. They can’t get treatment, even for fractures.

lemme tell people in indiana are split on the issue. Half of them want the healthcare and the other half does not want the government to get involved. To the questions 1 and 2 yes, many people cannot afford health insurance and many rack up crazy amounts of bills because they don’t have insurance or if they do get sick, there is still major deductibles to pay. I have heard that having a heartattack costs like 100K. I believe that something needs to be done about health care, but obamas plan is not the answer. I haven’t heard nothing about the UK’s healthcare.
